Oxford Covered Market Map

We are working with the city’s regeneration manager and other parties to put together a proposal to revitalise oxford’s historic covered market. The covered market has been a beloved feature of oxford for the past 250 years since opening on 1 november 1774. Oxford covered market has been an important civic building and place of commerce since it opened in 1774, and remains an integral part of the city centre.

The covered market was officially opened on 1 november 1774 and remains in use. It was established in response to a general wish to clear 'untidy, messy and unsavoury stalls' from the main streets of central oxford. The market dates back to the 1770s and has always been an attraction for locals and visiting tourists who come from far and wide to soak up the building's history and heritage.

The project brought together local historians, poets, filmmakers and artists to create an immersive audio tour that’s part informative and part poetic wandering. The council’s ‘masterplan’ will consider improving entrances, enabling events, and improving public facilities.
